Day 2 - Strasbourg (F) to Bled (SLO)

Sunday 21st May
------------------------
Slept like a log and was awoken by the birds, sun and heat in the tent. A much needed extended sleep and it was time to pack-up and hit the road for another very long day.

The miles through Germany went slowly, as they do. Austrian motorways are lovely with interesting mountain views. Had a lot of distance to cover today so did motorways pretty much all the way. Had to buy Vignettes for both Austria and Slovenia. All good, but annoying that you also have to pay tolls in Austria. That said, someone has to pay for the impressive 8km tunnels cut through the mountains.

I was boiling when I left Strasbourg. Undid the zips on my jacket and trousers and thought about taking the liners-out. By the time the road in Austria made it's way into the mountains I reckon the temperature dropped by about 10C so it became quite chilly until I descended down into Bled.

Lovely here in Bled. Could easily spend a week here on the lake. Stunning, crystal-clear water, boat and cycle hire, castles to explore, canyoning trips, etc. Camp-site is pretty fancy and right on the lake. Not cheap though, not in 'proper' Eastern-Europe yet. €3.50 for a beer, what's that all about? Gonna take a decent walk around tomorrow morning before I leave. Would love to spend more time here, but there are so many places I still need to get to. That's the thing. I'm constantly passing places that would be worth exploring in their own right - like the Alsace-Loraine region, Maginot-Line, German Castle/Romantic route, Austrian Alps, Slovenian ski resorts....

Language here is interesting. Sounds like Czech. Speaking Polish, I can understand a fair bit but everyone speaks English really well.

Had a superb meal. Chicken and Mushrooms with Slovenian Cheese dumplings. A bit like Polish / Russian pierogi but not as good. The mushroom sauce was top-banana though. Arrived too late and too tired to cook anything. Think this may become a common theme. Beer is superb - just what I need after a long day.

Tomorrow, a slow route down to Croatia. Still debating if to check-out Ljubliana or possibly hit it on the way back?
